Privacy Policy
Lit Spelling is built by families, for families. We believe people should be able to learn without giving up their privacy. This page explains what information we collect, why we collect it, and how we protect it. For information about how to use our service, please review our Terms of Use.
Our principles
- Collect as little data as possible.
- Be transparent about how data is used.
- Give spellers choice and control.
- Protect information with modern security practices.
What we collect
- Email address (optional).Only if you create a paid account or sign up for updates. If you sign in with Apple, we receive the email address Apple shares with us, and you can choose to hide your real one.
- Basic usage data.Anonymous statistics such as the number of words spelled or general feature usage to help us improve the experience.
- Payment and subscription details. When you subscribe on the web, Stripe processes your payment. In the iOS app, Apple processes it through the App Store, and RevenueCat manages subscription status for us. We never see or store your card number. We only receive your subscription status and transaction references.
- Analytics data.We use PostHog for product analytics. On our marketing website we may also enable advertising platforms such as Google, Meta, or TikTok to measure campaign performance; these use cookies or pixels and may collect approximate location (for example, country or region) based on IP address. The Lit Spelling app itself (app.litspelling.com and our iOS app) contains no advertising trackers. We don’t collect or store precise location data.
- No personal identifiers. We don’t collect names, ages, or photos. Voice audio used for spelling checks is turned into text in real time and never stored (see AI and speech technology below).
Data collection by user type
Anonymous users
Anonymous users can use Lit Spelling for free without sharing any personal details, subject to usage and feature restrictions such as a daily word limit. We create a device-linked guest account behind the scenes so your progress is saved, but it holds no name or email address. If you later subscribe, your progress moves with you to your full account.
Paid subscribers
Paid subscribers provide an email address for authentication and account management. Your progress is synced across devices and browsers, so you can continue learning from anywhere. Progress data is stored persistently and securely. Billing is handled by Stripe if you subscribed on the web, or by Apple if you subscribed in the iOS app.
Child profiles
Family subscribers can create child profiles. A parent chooses the child's username and password; no child email address or real name is needed. Children sign in with those details and see only their own spelling practice. Child profiles can't view or change billing, subscriptions, or account settings, and those stay with the parent.
How we use data
We use limited data to operate and improve Lit Spelling, provide customer support, and understand which features are helpful. We never sell information to advertisers or third parties. We process data based on legitimate interests to provide and improve the service. Where consent is required, you can withdraw it at any time.
AI and speech technology
Lit Spelling uses AI and speech technology to read words aloud and check spelling accuracy. When you spell out loud, your audio is sent securely to our speech provider (Google Cloud), which turns it into text in real time. The audio is used only to return that result. We never store voice recordings, and none of this is used for identification or profiling.
Cookies and analytics
Cookies help us remember preferences and measure site performance. Analytics data is aggregated and not linked to personal details. You can disable cookies in your browser or use a tracker blocker without losing access to Lit Spelling.
Data storage and processing
Lit Spelling is available to spellers worldwide, so data is processed and stored on secure cloud infrastructure that may be located outside your country. We use a small number of trusted providers to run Lit Spelling: Supabase (database and sign-in), Cloudflare (hosting and delivery), Google Cloud (speech and audio), PostHog (product analytics), Stripe (web payments), and Apple with RevenueCat (iOS app purchases). Each provider only receives what it needs to do its job, and all of them maintain high security and privacy standards.
Children and families
We know many spellers are children. Lit Spelling is designed with the same care we'd want for our own family; minimal data, no ads, and healthy usage limits. There is no chat, no social feed, and no way for strangers to contact a child through Lit Spelling. Words added to custom lists are automatically screened for inappropriate language. Parents can feel confident their child's privacy is protected.
Parental guidance and supervision
For children under 13, parents or guardians must be the account holder and payer. We don't need your child's name, age, or personal details; a parent-chosen username is all a child profile requires, and only purchases made by the parent are possible. We only capture the parent's email for account management. Parents are responsible for monitoring their child's usage and activity on the service. You can delete your family's data at any time (see below).
Your rights and choices
You can do both of these yourself, at any time, from Account, then Data and privacy in the app:
- Download your data. Get a CSV file of your complete word practice history with one click.
- Delete your account. This permanently removes your account, profile, and practice history. If you subscribed on the web, we cancel your Stripe subscription for you at the same time.
One important note for the iOS app: deleting your account does not cancel an App Store subscription, because Apple manages that billing. Cancel it in your Apple ID subscription settings; we show you a link to the right place when you delete. School-managed accounts are deleted through your school.
- Access or request a copy of the information we hold.
- Ask us to correct your data at any time.
- Opt out of marketing emails with a single click.
- Use the service anonymously if you prefer.
To make a privacy request or ask a question, email hello@litspelling.com. We aim to respond to all requests within 7 days.
