- Short vowel sounds in CVC words: ship, blend, stop, from
- Consonant clusters (blends): bl, br, cl, cr, dr, fl, fr, gl, gr, pl, pr, sl, sm, sn, sp, st, sw, tr
- Common digraphs: sh (ship), ch (chip), th (thin / this), wh (when)
- Simple inflectional endings: -ed (looked), -ing (running, basic)
