Spelling patterns commonly introduced or consolidated at Grade 3

  • All r-controlled vowels consolidated: ar, or, er, ir, ur in reading and spelling
  • Silent letter combinations: kn- (know), wr- (write), -mb (comb), gn- (gnat)
  • Vowel diphthongs mastered: oi, oy, ou, ow
  • Trigraphs: -tch (catch), -dge (bridge, badge)
  • Variant vowel: ea as /ĕ/ (bread, head, health)
  • Prefixes: un-, re-, pre-, dis-, mis- (consolidated)
  • Derivational suffixes: -ful, -less, -ness, -ment, -ly, -er, -est
  • Latin suffixes introduced: -tion, -sion
  • Multisyllabic decoding beginning: 2–3 syllable words using syllable types
  • High-frequency words: Dolch Grade 3, Fry 201–300
