US Grade 2 Spelling Guide

The doubling rule (also called the 1-1-1 rule) says: when you add a vowel suffix (-ing, -ed, -er) to a 1-syllable word that ends in a single consonant after a single short vowel, you double the final consonant. So run → running, hop → hopped, big → bigger. Grade 2 is when this is typically introduced because students now know enough vowel patterns to understand why doubling is needed: to protect the short vowel from being changed to a long one.

Completely normal. All three spellings make the same /ər/ sound (bird, hurt, her) and there is no reliable rule for which to use; it simply depends on the word. This is one of those areas where exposure and memory do most of the work. Grade 2 introduces the distinction; mastery usually extends into Grade 3 and beyond. Grade 1 established short vowels, blends, digraphs, and the silent-e pattern. Grade 2 expands this into the full range of long vowel spellings (oa, ow, ew, oo, etc.), adds r-controlled vowels, teaches the suffix spelling rules, and introduces prefixes. By the end of Grade 2, students typically have a solid grasp of 1–2 syllable words using regular patterns. Every child moves through this progression at their own pace. Some will be consolidating Grade 1 patterns while learning Grade 2 concepts, and that is entirely normal.
