What is typically covered in Grade 4?

Based on Common Core Language Standards and widely used ELA frameworks. Individual schools vary, so use this as a helpful orientation, not a strict checklist.

Spelling patterns commonly introduced or consolidated at Grade 4

  • Greek and Latin affixes: photo-, tele-, bio-, geo-, trans-, inter-, non-, sub-, over-
  • Greek and Latin roots as meaning clues: graph (write), port (carry), aud (hear), vis (see)
  • Extended suffix set: -tion, -sion, -ture, -ive, -ous, -al, -ible, -able
  • Six syllable types applied: closed, open, silent-e, vowel team, r-controlled, consonant-le
  • Consonant-le syllable: table, little, simple, giggle
  • Syllable juncture doubling (VCCV): butter, happen, sitting
  • Homophones correctly used in writing: to/too/two, there/their/they're
  • Tier 2 academic vocabulary beginning: Fry 301–400
