What is typically covered in Grade 1?
Based on Common Core Language Standards and widely used ELA frameworks. Individual schools vary, so use this as a helpful orientation, not a strict checklist.
Spelling patterns commonly introduced or consolidated at Grade 1
- Short vowels in CVC words (cat, bed, sit, hop, cup)
- Consonant digraphs: sh, ch, th (voiced and voiceless), wh
- Consonant blends, initial: bl, cl, fl, pl, br, cr, dr, gr, tr, st, sp, sk, sm, sn, sw; final: nd, nt, mp
- Silent-e (CVCe) long vowel pattern: a_e, i_e, o_e, u_e
- Early vowel teams: ai, ay, ee, ea (introduced)
- Inflectional endings: -s, -es, -ed, -ing on base words (no spelling changes yet)
- High-frequency sight words: Dolch Pre-Primer + Primer (~92 words), Fry 1–100
