US Grade 8 Spelling Words

Most English words ending in the /sēd/ sound use -cede: precede, recede, concede, intercede. Only three use -ceed: exceed, succeed, proceed. And only one standard English word uses -sede: supersede. A simple mnemonic: 'only three -ceed, only one -sede, everything else is -cede.' Grade 8 is when this is typically taught explicitly because it is non-obvious and appears in formal writing. Having this rule reliably learned prevents a common class of errors in high school and college writing.

The Academic Word List (AWL), developed by Averil Coxhead, is a set of 570 word families that appear frequently across university academic texts: in sciences, humanities, commerce, and law. By Grade 8, students encounter many AWL words in textbooks and assigned reading. Building active spelling and usage knowledge of AWL Sublists 1–3 directly supports writing quality, reading comprehension, and standardized test performance. Words like analyze, constitute, and establish appear across every school subject from Grade 8 onward.

The spelling-meaning connection principle: related words share spelling even when sounds change. The n in condemn is silent in everyday speech, but condemnation makes it audible, revealing that the n was always there. Similarly, muscle's silent c appears clearly in muscular; solemn's silent n surfaces in solemnity. This pattern runs throughout English because spelling preserves the word's root, not just its current pronunciation. At Grade 8, using these connections as a spelling strategy is far more reliable than trying to remember silent letters word by word.

Rote memorisation works for a smaller and smaller proportion of words as vocabulary grows. At Grade 8 level, the most productive approach is morphological analysis and etymological awareness: understanding how words are built and where they come from. This lets students work out the spelling of an unfamiliar word rather than having to have seen it before.
