US Grade 9 Spelling Words

By Grade 9, the emphasis shifts from learning specific words to two higher-order skills: rapid morpheme analysis (breaking an unfamiliar word into prefix + root + suffix and working out the spelling from known parts) and etymological reasoning (using word history to predict how a word is spelled). Students who have this toolkit can handle words they have never seen before. This is essential for college-preparatory writing, standardized tests, and disciplinary reading across science, history, and literature.

SAT and ACT vocabulary tasks draw heavily on the Academic Word List and multimorphemic academic vocabulary, exactly the focus of Grades 6–9. The most high-leverage preparation: systematic study of Greek and Latin roots, understanding assimilated prefix patterns (il-, ir-, im-, in-), and building familiarity with AWL words in context. These words are hard because they are transliterations of Greek words. They preserve Greek spelling conventions rather than following English phonics. Onomatopoeia comes from Greek onoma (name) + poiein (to make); epistemological from episteme (knowledge) + logos (study) + -ical. The strategy is to break them into their Greek morpheme parts: onoma-to-poeia, epistem-olog-ical. Once you know the parts and their Greek spellings, the whole word becomes manageable. Etymology is the most powerful tool at this level.

Many Grade 9 students have gaps in specific pattern knowledge that were never fully addressed, particularly assimilated prefixes, the -cede/-ceed/-sede family, and complex vowel alternations. It is common for capable readers and writers to have these blind spots because spelling and reading instruction often diverged after Grade 5. Targeted, systematic review of these patterns is worth doing at any age, even for strong students who want to close the final gaps before college writing.
