US Grade 2 Spelling Words

The inflectional suffix rules (doubling the final consonant, as in running; dropping the silent-e, as in making; and changing y to i, as in cries) are the most consequential Grade 2 patterns because students use them constantly in writing. These rules require understanding the underlying vowel patterns from Grade 1, which is why Grade 2 is when they are systematically introduced. If your child finds these tricky, a few weeks of focused practice on each rule individually is the most effective approach.

Diphthongs (oi as in oil, oy as in boy, ou as in out, ow as in cow) are trickier than regular vowel teams because the vowel sound glides: it starts in one position and moves to another. Grade 2 is when these are typically introduced. The spelling challenge is remembering which letters to use: oi appears in the middle of words, oy usually at the end. For ou vs. ow (as in cow), it often depends on word position too. Short, frequent practice with word sorting is the most effective approach.

Most Grade 2 programs introduce all five r-controlled vowels (ar, or, er, ir, ur) but expect mastery of the common ones (ar, or) while er, ir, and ur are still being consolidated. This is normal; all three spell the same sound (/ər/) with no reliable rule for which to use, so they simply require exposure and repetition. The Grade 2 list focuses on high-frequency words using each pattern. Grade 3 is where all five are consolidated.

Teach the meaning before the spelling: can't = can not, don't = do not, they're = they are. Once your child understands that the apostrophe marks where letters were removed, the spelling becomes much more logical. A common sticking point is its (belonging to it, no apostrophe) vs. it's (it is, with apostrophe). This often takes until Grade 3 or 4 to fully consolidate, even for strong spellers. Focus on the most common contractions first (can't, don't, I'll, won't) and build from there.
