US Grade 6 Spelling Words

Grade 6 is the transition to middle school, and vocabulary demands reflect this. Words become longer, more morphologically complex, and increasingly cross-curricular: algorithm in maths, photosynthesis in science, democracy in social studies. The spelling of these words requires knowledge of Latin and Greek roots rather than phonics alone. Spelling at Grade 6 is really morphology study: understanding how words are built is the most powerful approach, not memorising individual words.

Spellcheck catches basic substitutions (their vs. there) but does not help with vocabulary gaps. A student who does not know what 'photosynthesis' or 'provisional' means cannot use those words accurately in writing even with spellcheck. The Latin and Greek root knowledge that drives Grade 6 spelling is the same knowledge that drives vocabulary range, reading comprehension, and academic writing quality. Strong spellers also write more fluently because they are not interrupted by uncertainty about individual words.

Learning word families (predict, prediction, predictable, predictably) is one of the highest-return strategies at Grade 6. When your child learns to spell one word in a family, they get partial access to all related forms because the base spelling stays the same. Knowing 'describe' helps with description, descriptive, and descriptively. This builds both spelling and vocabulary simultaneously, which matters increasingly as academic writing demands grow.

Quality beats quantity. Rather than working through all 100 words rapidly, focus on 8–12 words per week with varied daily practice: word sorting, hear-and-spell, sentence use. Research consistently shows that deep practice with fewer words produces better retention than rapid coverage of long lists. Working through one group per week, spending a few minutes daily on hear-and-type practice, is more effective than weekend cramming sessions.
