Australian Year 2 Spelling Words

The doubling rule: when a short-vowel CVC word gets an -ing or -ed suffix, the final consonant doubles (hop → hopping, run → running). This preserves the short vowel. Without doubling, 'hoping' would look like the word 'hope + ing'. The simplest way to explain this to Year 2 children: 'Is the vowel long or short? Short vowel, you need two consonants to keep it short.' Visual sorting (hopping vs. hoping) makes the contrast clear. This is one of the most important Year 2 spelling rules.

Many compound words are naturally familiar from everyday language (birthday, playground, lunchbox), so Year 2 is an ideal time to make their spelling systematic. Compound words are satisfying for early spellers because they are built from two words the child already knows. The spelling strategy is transparent: just spell each word in order. This builds confidence alongside the more challenging suffix and digraph work in the same year.

Informal abbreviations in written work at Year 2 are common, especially for children who are used to digital messaging. The goal for Year 2 is to understand that contractions have a formal written form (they're, not they r) and that the apostrophe shows where letters are missing (they + are = they're). Regular exposure to reading conventionally spelled text, combined with explicit teaching of a few key contractions, gradually builds this convention. It is not a cause for concern at Year 2.

When reading, your child only needs to know that ai makes the /ā/ sound (one direction). When spelling, they need to choose between ai (rain), ay (play), a-e (cake), ei (eight), and eigh (weigh), which gives multiple options for the same sound. This is called the encoding challenge, and it is why spelling is harder than reading even for confident readers. For Year 2, focusing on ai in the middle of words and ay at the end of words provides a reliable starting rule that handles the most common cases.
