Australian Year 8 Spelling Words

The Academic Word List (AWL), developed by Averil Coxhead at Victoria University of Wellington, identifies word families that appear frequently across all university academic disciplines. Year 8 students who actively build AWL vocabulary are preparing for senior secondary and tertiary study. The AWL words on this list (analyse, assess, concept, establish, evidence) appear in assessment tasks, textbooks, and academic writing across every school subject. Building active spelling and usage knowledge of these words is one of the highest-return vocabulary investments a Year 8 student can make.

Discreet (careful, not drawing attention) and discrete (separate, distinct) are a genuinely tricky pair. A memory trick: discrete keeps its two e's separate (t between them) just as discrete things are separate; discreet keeps its e's together because a discreet person keeps things together (private). In practice, discrete is mainly used in maths and science contexts ('discrete data sets'), while discreet is used in social contexts. The context usually resolves the ambiguity.

French loanwords follow French pronunciation rules, not English phonics. Silhouette, chauffeur, and manoeuvre preserve French spelling conventions: the silent h in chauffeur, the -oette pattern in silhouette, the -oeuvre in manoeuvre. The most effective approach at Year 8 is etymology: knowing that manoeuvre comes from French manœuvre (to work with hands) helps explain the unusual oe and the silent final e. Visual memory and breaking words into syllables (ma-noe-uvre) also help. These words require more deliberate practice than phonics-decodable words.

Year 8 students have the metacognitive capacity to analyse words rather than just memorise them. For each new word, the most effective approach: identify the base or root (renaissance = re + nascence = rebirth), understand the meaning, connect it to related words (renaissance → natal → prenatal), use it in a sentence, and practise hearing-then-spelling rather than copying. This analytical approach produces deeper, more durable learning than copying lists, and it also builds the vocabulary knowledge that supports reading comprehension and essay writing.
