Australian Year 3 Spelling Words

These 'historically irregular' words reflect older English and French pronunciations that have shifted over time, but the spellings were fixed before the pronunciation changed. 'Bought', 'thought', 'taught', 'caught' all share the -ough/-aught pattern and make the same /aw/ sound in Australian English. The most reliable strategy is to learn these as a group: all four share the pattern, so learning one helps with all of them. Year 3 is also when students encounter these words frequently in reading, so regular exposure supports spelling development naturally.

Silent letters often represent the history of a word and, importantly, they can reappear in related forms: know (silent k) → knowledge (silent k still there); wrap → wrapper; climb → climber. This is a first introduction to the spelling-meaning principle that becomes central in Years 4–7. For Year 3, a simple approach: when you learn a word with a silent letter, try to think of a related word where the silent letter becomes audible. This makes it memorable.

Drawing silly pictures or memory tricks for each word can help. In practice, their/there/they're confusion typically persists through Years 3–5 for many children, and this is normal. They are mastering a genuinely complex three-way distinction in formal writing that adults also occasionally stumble over.

Words containing common patterns like -tion (section, station, action) are within the scope of NAPLAN Year 3 literacy assessments, which test words typically encountered in school reading and writing at that year level. Rather than teaching specifically for the test, the best preparation is systematic coverage of the patterns students would naturally encounter, which is exactly what this list aims to cover. Students who know the -tion pattern reliably from Year 3 have a significant advantage in all their writing, not just in NAPLAN.
