Australian Year 4 Spelling Words

The Australian Curriculum introduces morphological knowledge (understanding how words are built from roots and affixes) from early primary. By Year 4, students are regularly reading content-area texts in science, geography, and history that contain technical vocabulary built from Greek and Latin. Learning that tele means far (telescope, telephone, telegram) or bio means life (biology, biography, biome) gives students a decoding and spelling tool that works across hundreds of words simultaneously. It is one of the highest-return investments in language learning.

In Australian English (unlike American English), the verb is practise and the noun is practice. Your child practises spelling (verb); they go to spelling practice (noun). A handy memory trick: advice (noun) and advise (verb) follow the same pattern. Advice/practice are nouns, advise/practise are verbs. This distinction is tested in NAPLAN and is a standard expectation in Australian school writing from Year 4 onward.

Beautiful is one of the most commonly misspelled words by Australian Year 4 students. The tricky part is the eau sequence (from French beau, meaning beautiful/handsome). A popular mnemonic: Big Elephants Are Ugly: B-E-A-U. Then add -tiful. Breaking the word into syllables (beau-ti-ful) and practising each syllable separately also helps. This is a word worth spending extra time on because it appears frequently in creative writing assessments.

The NAPLAN Year 3 and Year 5 reading tests include words typical of those year levels, and the spelling test (currently part of the Writing assessment until further changes) requires students to write words they hear spoken aloud. The best preparation for Year 4 (in the run-up to Year 5 NAPLAN) is systematic, audio-first spelling practice: hear the word, spell it without looking. This is exactly how NAPLAN tests spelling. Focus on words from the five groups in this list, particularly multisyllabic words and commonly confused pairs.
