No, not all at once and not all at the same time. This list is a reference resource spanning the whole Kindy year, not a checklist of words expected by the end of the first week. Most Kindy programs work through short vowel families progressively: the -at family, then -ig, then -ot, and so on. Your child is doing well if they can confidently decode and attempt to spell CVC words by the end of Kindy. Use this list as a menu to choose from, not as a target to race through.

Onset and rime is a way of breaking words into two parts: the onset (the initial consonant or consonant cluster) and the rime (the vowel and what follows). In the -ap family, b-ap, c-ap, l-ap and n-ap all share the same rime (-ap). Learning to recognise rimes helps Kindy children decode unfamiliar words and builds phonological awareness, the foundation for spelling. Rhyming activities and word-family sorting are developmentally appropriate practice activities at this stage.

High-frequency words like the, is, my, and to appear so often in reading and writing that learning to spell them (rather than decode them letter by letter) helps reading and writing fluency. At Kindy, learning these words is partly phonological (matching sounds to letters) and partly visual memory (recognising the whole word shape quickly). Most Kindy programs use a mixture of both approaches, which is why this list includes both phonics-based CVC words and high-frequency sight words.

Short, playful sessions of 5–10 minutes work best for Kindy learners. Say a word aloud, ask your child to repeat it, then guide them to write it on paper, a whiteboard, or sand. Focus on letter sounds, not letter names: 'what sounds do you hear in cat?' rather than 'what letters spell cat?'. Kindy children learn best through multisensory activities: forming letters with playdough, tracing in sand, or using magnetic letters. Keep it fun, low-pressure, and brief.
