Australian Year 9 Spelling Words

NAPLAN Year 9 language conventions targets vocabulary expected to be familiar from regular secondary school reading and writing, including subject-specific terms from science, history, and literature, as well as academic vocabulary from the AWL. Words are longer, more morphologically complex, and increasingly drawn from classical (Greek and Latin) or French origins. Students who have built morphological knowledge through Years 4–8 have a significant advantage. The NAPLAN Year 9 spelling section typically includes 20 words across a writing-in-context format.

Verisimilitude (the appearance of being true or real, from Latin verus + similis) is the kind of high-level literary vocabulary that appears in senior English essays, marking rubrics, and critical thinking assessments. At Year 9, students writing literary analysis are expected to discuss how texts create a sense of realism or authenticity, and having the vocabulary word available makes their writing more precise and sophisticated. Words like this are learned through wide reading and deep engagement with texts, not just word lists.
