Australian Year 5 Spelling Words

The NAPLAN spelling test (part of the writing convention tasks) presents words in a sentence context with a word read aloud for the student to write. The most effective preparation: audio-first practice where your child hears each word spoken and writes it without looking at the spelling. This is exactly the test format. Work through the NAPLAN vocabulary group in this list, then the commonly misspelled words group, which includes words frequently targeted in NAPLAN at Year 5 level. Short daily sessions of 10–15 minutes are more effective than weekend cramming.

There is no perfectly reliable rule for choosing between -ence (difference, evidence) and -ance (distance, importance). A rough guide: words from Latin verbs ending in -ere/-ire tend to use -ence (persistent → persistence, violent → violence) while those from -are/-ari tend to use -ance (tolerate → tolerance, perform → performance). In practice, frequent exposure and explicit memorisation of common words is more effective than applying the rule. Year 5 is when these endings are typically introduced, and consolidation continues into Year 6 and beyond.

Necessary is notoriously tricky because it has one c and two s's, the reverse of what many people expect. Memory strategies that work: 'one Collar and two Socks' (one c, two s's); 'never eat chips, eat something sweet and sardines'; or simply breaking it into syllables: ne-ces-sa-ry. NAPLAN data consistently shows necessary as one of the most missed words in Year 5 assessments, so it is worth spending extra time on. Daily see-cover-write-check sessions over two weeks typically cement it.

Learning the compete → competition → competitive family gives your child three words for the effort of understanding one root. The spelling connection also reveals the grammar: compete is a verb, competition is the noun, competitive is the adjective. From Year 5, this word-family approach becomes the dominant strategy for building vocabulary because the number of words to learn outpaces what rote memorisation can handle. Students who learn word families also perform better on reading comprehension because they can infer the meaning of unfamiliar words from their structure.
